Italian Greyhound low thyroid

Hi, I am new to this message board but was recommended by a friend. I apologize in advance for the looong post. I have an eleven year old Italian Greyhound (Giorgio - goes by George) who last summer was diagnosed with Addison's disease and initially was fine, but seemed to have some symptoms between his monthly shots. In early February he was diagnosed with low thyroid and since I have been giving him his medication (just over three weeks) it is like he is a puppy again. I am a little frustrated with my (v expensive) vet because I think he has had low thyroid for at least four years if not five. I thought he was getting old, his skin around his neck started to sag as did the skin under his belly. Since the medication the "turkey neck" is almost gone and he is running and jumping like he hasn't done in about four years. In the last couple of days, his coat has been a little dry and flaky, has anyone had a similary experience and if so, what is recommended? -- Beverly

RE: Italian Greyhound low thyroid

In the case of my Indy, a dry coat and flaky skin were symptoms of low thyroid for him, along with a cranky disposition. Since you've been giving your George thyroid medication for only three weeks, I don't think that is the case with your him. Maybe someone can recommend another vet in your area? Someone who will listen to your concerns and take action on them? I'm lucky to have a wonderful veterinarian for my two iggys.

I do know that Indy has been on thyroid medication the past three years, and we've had to increase his dosage twice. Indy is six years old, but each year I have senior blood panels done on him.
